Features:

  • ✅ One Chokecherry plant (Prunus virginiana), 1-2 year old and 12-24 inches tall, sent bare-root with roots protected in moist material during dormancy (October-April). After dormancy ends in April, plants are potted in soil and sent in containers. This native species displays drooping flower clusters in late spring and broad, egg-shaped leaves, with berry color varying from dark red to black among seedlings.
  • ✅ Hardy in zones 2-10, this member of the rose family has been cultivated since colonial times and serves as an important food source for birds. While wild fruits possess a strong astringent quality, selected varieties offer more pleasant flavor. The plant supports various wildlife, including Eastern tent caterpillars, and adapts well to naturalized settings.
  • ✅ Orders are prepared for mailing at the beginning of each week, with spring orders processed more frequently. Each plant is carefully packaged and sent with tracking for domestic orders within the United States. Also known by many regional names including wild cherry and chokeberry, this versatile species has historical significance for Indigenous communities.
  • ✅ Your order will arrive in good condition. If any issues occur upon receiving order, contact us the same day with a detailed description and photos so we can assist you. Can not be sent to state of Vermont due to its state restrictions.

Details: ✅ Up for sale is one 1-2-year-old bare-root Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) plant, 8-14 inches tall. The plant will be sent with roots wrapped in wet media during dormancy (October-April). After breaking dormancy in April, it will be potted in soil and shipped in a plastic container.

✅ This native species produces berries ranging from dark red/brown to black due to natural seedling variation (these are seed-grown, not cloned). The plant features distinctive drooping flower clusters in late spring and broad, egg-shaped leaves. While wild fruits are astringent, cultivated varieties offer improved flavor. Birds love the berries, and the plant serves as a host for Eastern tent caterpillars.

✅ Hardy in zones 2-10, chokecherry has over 20 regional names including wild cherry, chokeberry, and sloe tree. A member of the rose family, it has been cultivated since colonial times and was a staple food for Indigenous peoples, who processed the berries to reduce bitterness and prussic acid in the pits.

✅ Your order will arrive in good condition. If any issues occur upon receiving order, contact us the same day with a detailed description and photos so we can assist you. Can not be sent to state of Vermont due to its state restrictions.
